Minnesota's Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) licenses residential building contractors and remodelers under Minn. Stat. 搂 326B.805, and licenses electrical and plumbing contractors under their own chapters. There is no statewide license for commercial general contractors.

Residential license exemptions

Section 326B.805 lists exemptions, including a person whose total gross annual receipts for performing specialty skills that would require licensure do not exceed $15,000, mechanical contractors, and plumbers, electricians and others licensed statewide when doing that licensed work.

Public data

DLI publishes its license data as free nightly exports. This site's Minnesota listings come from those files: 10,457 residential building contractor businesses, 2,193 Class A electrical contractors, 643 technology systems contractors and 1,521 plumbing contractors with an Issued status and a Minnesota address (October 30, 2026).
